Tribals from Orissa (India) oppose introduction of Bt Brinjal variety

Tribal women knocked on the doors of houses around Bhubaneswar today displaying huge cut-outs of Bt Brinjal asking residents to oppose the introduction of Bt Brinjal varities in the state. They visited many houses in Chandrashekarpur, Sahid Nagar, Bapuji Nagar, Nayapally, MLA colony and OUAT colony. They were assisted by Pradyut, the co-ordinator of the campaign against Bt. Brinjal.

New concern over Bt brinjal plans in India

Consumer groups are concerned about exposing Indian consumers to genetically modified Bt brinjal, even as the government is considering grant of approval to Mahyco to commercially launch the GM food this year. The Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC), the national regulatory authority for GM foods, has set up a special committee to study Mahyco’s biosafety data from nine years of research on Bt brinjal. It is set to give its verdict soon.

Bt brinjal can resist attack of FSB larvae, safe for consumption: study

A study conducted by the global pro-GMO lobby, ISAAA, has claimed that Bt brinjal can resist the attacks of the common enemy fruit shoot borer (FSB) larvae and also be safe for human consumption. [...] The ISAAA study lauded the regulatory system in India and hoped that India would be able to give to the world the first Bt brinjal.

MAHYCO (India) hopeful of approval for Bt-Brinjal commercial release in 2010

Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company Limited is hopeful of getting approval for the commercial release of Bt Brinjal seeds from the GEAC by end of the next financial year. ”[...] We have also applied for commercial release of Bt Brinjal seeds with the GEAC and are hopeful that it would be approved by the end of 2009-10,” MAHYCO Joint Director (Research) Usha Barwale Zehr told reporters here.

Indian doctors caution against genetically modified food

At a time when Bt Brinjal may soon be introduced into the market, several renowned doctors of the city today initiated a consumer awareness campaign against genetically modified (GM) foods, citing health problems. The doctors called for an immediate moratorium on all GM foods and vowed to intensify the campaign in the coming months so that the Government sets up a safety assessment protocol to look into the safety of such food items.

Indian Government halts marketing of Bt brinjal

With new scientific studies now finding genetically modified foods not fully safe for human consumption, the government has put a ’temporary halt’ on the commercialisation of BT brinjal, the move prompted by the Supreme Court’s special representative at the Centre’s Genetic Engineering Approval Committee. Dr Pushpabhargava said, ”I have fears that there are vested interests. Any study that does not suit them are just dismissed.” However, Bhargavas intervention has not stopped biotech company Mahyco from going ahead with field trials showing here a clear clash of interests.

Orissa (India) Government in two minds over GM crops

Orissa has seen it all. The livestock allergy leading to serious health ailments, including deaths in Khaprakhol of Patnagarh sub-division in Balangir district where a herd of goats was affected by Bt cotton and other incidents in KBK districts and areas in Rayagada speak volumes about the effects of genetically modified (GM) crops. However, as the recent news of trials of Bt brinjal has become the talk of the town, the pertinent question is, however, should Orissa go for it?

GM crops in India: environment ministry proposes, Ramadoss opposes

The environment ministry might be planning to bring genetically modified (GM) crops like Bt Brinjal to your plate but Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss has promised to ”continue to oppose” GM foods. Ramadoss, in a meeting with hundreds of farmers organised by his party PMK in Kancheepuram town of Tamil Nadu last week, promised to resist the entry of GM foods for common use.
