GMO-free regions, biodiversity and rural development

 

More than 230 regions, over 4000 municipalities and other local entities and tens of thousands of farmers and food producers in Europe have declared themselves "GMO-free" expressing their commitment not to allow the use of genetically modified organisms in the agriculture and food of their territories.
Representatives of the GMO free regions meet regularly once a year (in Berlin 2005 and 2006 and in Brussels 2007) an formed an ongoing network for further co-operation. Their next meeting will be in Bonn, Germany, during the negotiations of the Biosafety Protocol under the Convention on Biological Diversity in May 2008. This first global meeting will be conducted under the title "Planet Diversity".
